ART of SCIENCE
Dr. Bob Kapheim
Art of Science is a highly motivating program in which participants receive art instruction coupled with science concepts. The program can be tailored to faculty inservice training or student participation.
3rd to 5th graders
Students will develop their drawing ability while coupling drawing skills with grade level appropriate science concepts. Each week will feature a drawing skill combined with a science concept. For example drawing a starfish and types of body symmetry plus what is an echinoderm?
ART of SCIENCE
6th to 8th graders
Students will develop their drawing ability while coupling drawing skills with grade level appropriate science concepts. Each week will feature a drawing skill combined with a science concept. For example, Creating a Japanese Fish Print or drawing a cartoon depicting a science concept. Instruction will involve pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, and color pencil activities.
EXAMPLE LESSONS
Cartooning:
Gary Larson, noted for his Far Side cartoons, was once a science teacher. Many of his cartoons depict a science concept. In this respect the cartoon represents a metaphor. Using the cartoon as a metaphor participants will be pick a science concept and then draw a cartoon that represents that concept. Participants learn the art of cartooning while demonstrating their understanding of the science concept through their cartoon.
Microscopic Art:
Through the use of a projection microscope participants will witness various slides and make drawings from the slide. Examples will include the stomata of leaves, fish scales, prepared and stained slides, close ups of structures such as the mouth parts of an insect. Participants will view the crystallization process under the microscope and learn to produce abstract drawings representing the crystal formation process. Participants will learn about the molecular formation of crystals.
Drawing from nature:
Participants will draw from actual organisms such as starfish, shells, leaves, cones and seeds with matching handout providing scientific insight, descriptions, and fun facts regarding the object of the drawing.
Printing:
Participants will use a variety of printing techniques to create art from actual organisms, such as leaf tracings, Japanese fish prints, linoleum block cuttings and the use of potatoes and other vegetable products for printing. Impressions of organisms will be used to create castings and fossil simulations.
Chemical and Physical concepts:
Participants will also learn about a variety of chemical and physical concepts that result in a work of art.
Dr. Bob Kapheim is an awarding winning science teacher as well as an award winning artist and photographer. He is accomplished in pencil, color pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and water color pencil drawing. Programs can be tailored to art studios, elementary and middle school teachers or students.
